Animation is a lucrative career these days. A lot of new opportunities are falling in place. In the last two years, the domestic animation market has grown significantly and so has the quality of production. This makes animation a safe, long term career, as long as one chooses the right course and institute.
  a
Scope
Animation industry is booming in India and not just its usage in films, television has become a major part, but also other sectors like automobile designing, interior designing, gaming, scientific animation, digital tutorials show a much high incorporation of animation. Being a part of entertainment industry and having the power to create an unreal environment makes this industry generate as a unique combination of art and technology.
a
The future of animation industry looks very bright. As per a Nasscom report, the animation industry in India was around US $460 million in 2008 and is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 27% to reach US $1.16 billion by 2012.
a
Faculty members say that there is a shortage of trained professionals in the industry. "There are many multimedia experts in the city but there are hardly any animators, so at the end of 2009 the industry will need approximately 100000 animators and thus recession has not hit this sector," says Abhijit Bhadra, faculty animation, S T Infotech Limited.
Lajita Thampi agrees. "We had our placement expo for our students a few weeks ago and there were companies were recruiting animators. This is a clear sign that recession has not hit this profession," says Lajita, the placement head at Arena Animation.
a
Nature of work
Creating an animation consists of idea development, pre -production, production and postproduction. The characters are created in idea development. In pre-production, the ideas are converted into layouts. Scriptwriting, storyboarding, character development, backgrounds, layout designing, animatics and voice come under pre-production. The actual result of the story can be visualised in the production stage which is a blend of animation, in-betweening or tweening (i.e. the creation of intermediate frames between two main images to give the appearance that the first image flows smoothly into the second one), scanning, compositing (i.e. combining images from different sources to create a finished frame of animation), background preparation and colouring. Final sound recordings, colour editing, testing and special sound effects are all added at the post-production stage. Post-production stage activities include editing, special effects (SFX), colour correction, compositing, voice and music editing and rendering. Rendering gives the final touches to an animation scene, in which the data is converted to raster image or animation.

Content developers
a
Modellers - They make the models for animation. Must have a solid understanding of anatomy, form and volume.
Story board artists - Those with strong drawing skills, who can visualize a sequence of events from frame to frame.
Character animators - They bring characters to life and generally have knowledge of traditional animation, stop-motion animation as well as claymation
Background artists - They specialise in painting the background of the characters and setting the background for the project.
Layout artists - They decide the lighting and camera angles and sketch the background design for the animation.
2D animators - They are involved in the creation of a high volume of separate drawings that define a sequence.
In-between animators - They have to learn all the basics of animation and are at the beginning position in the career.
Scanner operators - They scan the clean up artists’ drawings.
Compositing artists - Layering individual frames of animation on top of one another to create final images.
These images are then strung together to create complete shots or mini animated movies.
Visual effects artists - They integrate live-action footage with computer-generated imagery or other elements.
Audio and video specialists - Designing the sound for animation and also editing the visuals with softwares such as Avid and Final Cut Pro.
Visualisers – Visualise the script and create basic designs for the project.
Texture artists - Apply surface to the 3D character, object or environment.
Rigging artists - They take the modelled, textured 3D character or object and set it up with a skeletal system or joints (if required). Without this step, the 3D model would not be able to animate, talk or move fluidly and correctly.
Clean-up artists - They check the accuracy and consistency of the designs and drawings. A good clean up artist should have excellent draftsman skill with the knowledge of density, width, volume and mass.
Lighting artists - They create variations of shade, colour intensity and shadows.
Digital ink and paint artists - They give colours to each frame.
Compositors - They bring together all the different characters and backgrounds into a single frame.
Editors - They edit the visuals with softwares like Avid and Final Cut Pro.
Key frame animators - Draw pictures of a movement’s beginning and end.
Rendering artists - They take all the data in a scene such as models, textures, animation, lighting, etc and output the correct combination in the form of individual frames of animation.
3D animators - They take the sculpted, textured and rigged 3D model and breathe life into it. This is done by putting in order the key frames so that they appear to be in motion.
Image Editors - They assemble visual and audio components of a film into a coherent and effective whole.
Compositors - They combine visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create an illusion. It involves the replacement of selected parts of an image with other materials.
a
Visual effects (commonly shortened to VFX) are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot. Visual effects often involve the integration of live-action footage and computer-generated imagery in order to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, or costly, to capture on film. They have become increasingly common in big-budget films, and have also recently become accessible to  amateur filmmakers with the introduction of affordable animation and compositing software.
a
Educational Qualification
Students need to have passed their Class XII with a minimum of 45 per cent for a diploma or a bachelor's degree. Arts graduates are generally given preference for postgraduate degrees, although students with a bachelor's degree in any discipline can apply.
a
Reputed institutes like National Institute of Design (NID) have entrance exams that test a student's perception, attitude, aptitude, achievement and motivation essential for a challenging and satisfying design career.
"We do not look for excellent marks all we need is creativity accompanied with innovation and power of imagination," says a HR personnel who declined to be named.
a
Skills
A creative field, animation requires imaginative skills along with a penchant for sketching and drawing. If one is considering a career in this in animation he/she should be prepared to put in long hours of hard work and dedication into his work.
a
Jitendra Arora, a second-year member of the Faculty Development Programme, NID, says: "One should have a good concept of colours and be very, very passionate about their work, because animation is not a glamorous career but definitely a exciting one.
a
"There is no need of any extraordinary talent in a student to be an animator he just needs superb visualisation that needs to be polished," explains Bhardra.
a
Specialization
Specialisations can be done in the field of 3D or 2D modelling, special FX creation, animation in general, character designing, game designing and interaction designing.
a
For programming and game design, individuals from IT, engineering and science background are generally given preference due to nature of job. For graphic and concept artists, fine arts background is considered a must.

A Fellow Member of the Institute who is normally a senior pro can use the suffix FCS after his / her name.

Scope in India

With the onward march of globalization in India remaining unabated the corporate sector has witnessed tremendous growth. Numerous companies from diverse fields have emerged on the Indian economic scene and with it the complexities involved in the running of an organization have also skyrocketed. It is here that the role of a Company Secretary is so important to an organization or business house, since he is competent to provide sound advice on corporate, legal, secretarial, administrative and even tax related matters. While a Company Secretary can aspire to get employment opportunities in government accounts or law departments, he can become a Chairman or Managing Director of a Company or be a part of the esteemed Board of Directors of a Company.

A budding and meritorious Company Secretary can hope to start his career with a monthly remuneration of Rs.20,000 - Rs.25,000. However, for an ordinary candidate, a monthly salary of Rs.10, 000 is almost guaranteed.

Scope Abroad

Although Company Secretaries are in great demand in India, in USA, UK and other western countries the profession or the professionals do not find tailor made opportunities. This is because the Company Secretary course is based on the Companies Act 1956, which has its roots in the Indian legal and political system and does not have much relevance outside India. A qualified Company Secretary may however find employment opportunities similar to those available to Business Graduates in either USA, Australia UK or other European countries.

How to Apply

Admission to the foundation course is open throughout the year.

Last Date to apply for December 2010 examination for CS Foundation Programme is 31st March, 2010

The Road to Chartered Accountancy

E-mail Print PDF
( 7 Votes )
Chartered Accountancy has emerged as one of the most prestigious and popular career options in growing economies like ours. It offers unlimited scope for growth, rewards and moolah .
Every country has its own Accountancy Association that regulates the number of Chartered Accountants. In India, the Chartered Accountants Act was passed in 1949, following which The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was formed.ICAI is the examining and licensing body that regulates the CA course.
A chartered accountant is a person who is accepted as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) after having passed the Final examination of the Chartered accountancy course conducted by the institute.

A Chartered accountant specializes in accounting, auditing and taxation. According to the Company Act, only CA’s in professional practice are allowed to be appointed as auditors of companies in India.

Nature of Work

CAs handles just about every aspect of finance – for both, organisations as well as individuals. “A CA conducts audits, provides financial advice in terms of investments, more specifically, with regard to the percentage of income that needs to be invested to minimise tax and helps in filing returns,” explains CA, P S Sanghvi. CAs specialize in accountancy, auditing, taxing, cost accountancy and law. “Updating oneself with the latest laws is very important. Although charted accountancy is looked at as a career in finance, I would say 50 per cent of the job we do is based on law,” affirms Sanghvi. Says Sanjeev Kapoor, CA, S P Kapoor & Company, “Today there are many new areas we cater to. For example, apart from accounting and auditing, today we are also work in the areas such as loan financing and project financing.”

Furthermore, with improved technologies, changing laws, and MNCs setting foot in the Indian market, several new fields of practice are emerging. Acknowledging this, Sanjeev Vora, a CA with 20 years of experience, says, “Today software consultancy is a big thing in the industry. With everything getting computerised, we work on financial and accounting softwares. IT is now a compulsory subject in the course itself.”

Nevertheless, irrespective of these new emerging areas, the traditional work areas remain at the core of this career. Here’s a quick overview of each:

Taxing

Tax management forms the primary area of function. This includes suggesting investments and working out means to reduce taxes (both direct as well as indirect taxes). Tax managers have to work in accordance with various national and international tax rules, subject to clients’ business or requirements. CAs also help individuals calculate their taxes and file returns.

Auditing

Auditing includes the evaluation and assessment of financial records of companies. This is one of the most important aspects of a CA’s job since according to the Company Act only professional CAs are authorised to conduct audits. Auditing can be internal or external. An auditor reviews the accounts as presented by the concerned authorities of the respective company in relation to the expenses and profit earned. Following this, they present their report on the accuracy of the same. Usually all companies conduct internal audits before inviting external authorities. Internal auditors do a thorough review of all the records and point out loop holes or inaccuracies that are fixed before external auditors are called upon.

Financial accounting

Maintaining accurate financial records is a major concern for big and small companies alike. CAs extend their service in terms managing these accounts. “Financial accounting is basically preparing the financial statements for a company based on the expenditures and income. This gives the management as well as stakeholders a clear picture of where the firm stands,” elaborates Vora.

Remuneration

The remuneration for a private consultant may be subject to the service offered and the city. “With a good, reputed company, a fresher can get up to six lakhs, per annum” says Kapoor. With experience the amount increases to as much as 30- 40 lakhs plus per annum.

Course

CA programme is of two years apart from the training period. It has three sections, Common Proficiency Test (CPT) that was earlier known as Professional Education exam PE1, Professional Competency Examination (PCE) and Final examination. The registration for CPT and PCE is open throughout the year. A student may register at any time during the year. However, as the examinations will be held twice a year in May and November, it is necessary that a student must register at least ten months before the examinations. After passing the Professional Competency Examination (PCE) candidates are eligible for registration as articled clerks/audit clerks for practical training. Computer Training Programme, ie 100 hours Information Technology is compulsory for the candidates who wish to register themselves as auditor clerk. Students can undergo this programme while pursuing CPT or PCE.

Articled clerk is a trainee attached to a practicing chartered accountant under a Deed of Articles for the duration three years. During this period the articled clerk will also need to continue studies for the CA exam. An audit clerk is a person who has served as a salaried employee for a minimum period of one year under a practicing chartered accountant. During the training period, candidates would be required to work in different areas learning the basics of auditing and taxation . This training enables them to learn the technical details of the job as well as to get an idea of the working environment of the profession.

Exam Pattern

CPT Examination is objective type test comprising of 4 subjects which are: -
Fundamentals of Accounting – 60 marks,
Mercantile Laws – 40 marks,
General Economics – 50 marks
Quantitative Aptitude – 50 marks.

The CPT Examination is held twice a year on a Sunday in the months of June and December every year. A student to be eligible to appear in the CPT Examination must have been registered for the CPT Course with Board of Studies of the Institute on or before 1st April in the case of June Examination and on or before 1st October in the case of December Examination and must have passed 12th Class Examination or already appeared in 12th Class Examination of a recognized Board.

Candidates have option to opt for English or Hindi language as medium, for the purpose of question papers booklet while answer sheets are in English Language only. Each student who appears in the CPT Examination is issued a Result Card within two weeks of the declaration of results. No Pass Certificate as such is issued to CPT pass students. A candidate securing 70% and above marks is declared to have passed with Distinction. A candidate securing a minimum of 60% marks in order of merit up to 10th Rank are included in the Merit List and Merit Certificate to such candidates are also issued.

Eligibility

(ii) Appear CPT examination after appearing in the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2examination) conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto and after completion of specified period (i.e. 60 days) from the date of registration for CPT prior to the first day of the month in which examination to be held with the Board of Studies.

Common Proficiency Test (CPT):  Although students can register after class 10, but he/she can appear for the exam only after appearing for 10+2. It comprises four subjects: Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics and Quantitative Aptitude. It is an objective-type paper with negative marketing. ICAI provides the required study material.

Application forms can either be downloaded from the ICAI website  www.icai.org  or can be acquired from one of its offices.

(iii) Join PCC, articled training and register for 100 hours ITT after passing CPT and 10+2 examination.

(iv) Undergo 100 hours ITT on completion of three months of articled training (100 hours ITT is a 20 days programme @ five hours per day; the training will be treated as part of the practical training).

(v) Appear in Professional Competence Examination (PCE) If
====>worked for not less than fifteen months as an articled assistant or equivalent period as an audit assistant or partly as an articled assistant and partly as an audit assistant, three months prior to the first day of the month in which examination is held; and
====>completed 100 hours ITT.
Eight months of audit training is treated as equivalent to six months of articled training. Any fractional period of audit training less than eight months is not counted for this purpose.

(vii) Appear in final examination on completion of the practical training on or before the last day of the month preceding the month in which the examination is held.
The final examination comprises two groups of four papers each. Group I includes Financial Reporting, Strategic Financial Management, Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics and Corporate and Allied Laws. Group II comprises Advanced Management Accounting, Information Systems Control and Audit, Direct Tax Laws and Indirect Tax Laws.

(viii) Pass Final examination and complete GMCS;

(ix) Enrol for membership.

Future perfect

The rapid growth of the money markets is leading to a growing demand for CAs. Irrespective of whether a company is big or small, or even individuals in the service sector, everyone seek the assistance of CA when it comes to managing money matters. As Sanghvi says, “The laws in India are very complicated and thus, difficult to understand. Additionally, they keep changing every year. Keeping track of the constant changes is a difficult task for even literate people, and in India the literacy level is still low. Therefore, people seek the service of a CA.”
Moreover, when it comes to auditing, as stated earlier, the Company Act authorizes only certified CAs to conduct audits for credential certifications, as a result of which, practically all companies require the service of CAs.
While the field’s future certainly seems promising, Vora warns, “It all depends on your performance. If you are good at your work, there is no looking back. But if you are unable to cope, then things can certainly difficult.”

Weighing the pros and cons

On the brighter side, chartered accountancy is a very respectable job and pays well. CAs provide a wide gamut of services. Thus the profession keeps you updated with the happenings in various fields. Nevertheless, the work hours can indeed be a disappointment. According to Kapoor, “Another aspect that can be looked at as a downside is the fact that the CA course gives equal weightage to all aspects like taxing, accounting, etc unlike MBA courses, wherein you have specialisations. Therefore, if a CA wishes to specialise in any particular field it’s completely up to him/ her to do it.”
Kapoor points out that in this profession there is considerable waste of intellect. He insists that there are many aspects of the work that are ‘clerical’ in nature. “For example, tasks like mere calculations,” he says, “do not require a CA”.

Getting started

It is always advisable to start off with a good company or a practising CA. CAs can be employed with a government office or a private firm, or choose to get into a private consultancy. Sanghvi explains, “If you are planning a consultancy firm, it could be difficult till you establish yourself and get clients. In the meanwhile pursuing a part-time job is a good idea.” But once you find your place in the industry, there is no looking back.

( 6 Votes )

Architecture is an innovative amalgamation of art and technology. Architects employ their imagination to build monuments that are aesthetically in tune with the principles of design while also being functional and usable to those inhabiting them.

With the concept of environment-friendly and green buildings fast catching up today, the focus is on building spaces that are ecologically sound. This, together with the booming real estate and construction industry, has fuelled the demand for architects.

As land values are appreciating, services of architects catering to functional, aesthetic and technical part of design are being increasingly sought.

Even the common perception that the services of architects are an added expenditure, is slowing changing. As the disposable income of average Indian is on rise, the expectations and aspirations of consumer have become high and they are willing to shed large amounts of money.

Qualities that an Architect should possess

An architect essentially should be a visionary. They rarely work in isolation. It is a profession in which one has to work in tandem with contractors, engineers and decorators and hence, team spirit and coordination are of utmost importance. An understanding of latest trends and parameters of planning are also essential. With the profession increasingly becoming technology driven, a technical bent of mind is always helpful.

Future Prospects

The future in architecture is very promising. Establishment of MNCs and SEZs, foreign investment and retail boom spell good time for architects. At least for the next 20-25 years, growth prospects are very bright.

Although the return on educational investment starts coming late, the shelf life of an architect is much more as compared to any other professional.

Per capita income is increasing, design sensibilities are improving and aspirations are also touching the roof. All these factors will fuel the demand for competent architects in the future.

Eligibility and admission

The COA conducts an aptitude test on an all-India basis called National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) for admission to the first year BArch degree at institutes and colleges of architecture under its purview. The test measures the candidates’ drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking ability, which are the building blocks to the study of the course. The minimum eligibility to apply for the course is 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised Board/University with Mathematics as a subject of examination (at least 50% aggregate). A minimum of 40 percent marks in NATA is required for admission. A merit list is then prepared on the basis of marks obtained in Class 12 and NATA (giving equal weightage to both) and admission granted to colleges across India.

Those with a science background can take the AIEEE, which is accepted by all National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Deemed Universities and central government universities and SPA. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee take in students through IIT-JEE. It’s advisable for students to give the NATA besides state-level exams. For instance, admission at Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA) is made on the basis of the Common Entrance Test (CET) and Architecture Aptitude Test conducted by the Punjab University.

JJ School of Arts and Architecture, Mumbai takes in students through a Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education. It is mandatory for every architectural institution imparting the five-year BArch degree course in the country to join the NATA and to admit students on the basis of a valid NATA score. Candidates, who are not admitted on the basis of valid NATA marks, will not be considered for registration as architects later on.

Job or Specialization?

After passing out from graduation, one can practice on his/her own after getting registered with the COA, which grants license for practice. They might also start working with an architectural firm or under the guidance of a well-established architect. Real estate firms such as Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj, L&T, Jindals and IMAXE constructions also employ architects on their payrolls as does Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

A fresher could start as a Junior Architect or Assistant and earn Rs. 12,000 to 15,000 a month. Later one could opt for the role at various levels of design, documentation and construction, says Pritpal Singh, a Delhi-based architect. The salary might increase with experience. Talking about the work, Bhaskar Rattan, associate architect with a firm based in Delhi says, “While 30 percent of the job focuses on designing what the client wants, it is not about design alone.” Be prepared for long hours. To convert design from paper to land needs a lot of coordination between engineers, construction workers, plumbers and contractors etc.

Higher Studies

While some choose to work, more than 70 percent of students opt for Master’ or further studies after completing their Bachelor’s programme. They specialise in streams such as Landscape Architecture, Architectural Conservation, Urban Design, Building Engineering & Management, Environmental Planning, Housing, Transport Planning, Regional Planning, Town and Country Planning, Industrial Design etc. The SPA and CEPT Ahmedabad are considered to be some of the best colleges for a Master’s degree. Students also opt for an MBA (real estate) offered by the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University’s School of Management Studies in collaboration with SPA. Besides these, opportunities also exist in government organisations such as Town and Country Planning Organisation, National Institute of Urban Affairs, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, National Building Construction Corporation Ltd. etc .

Though a fairly new area of work, genetic engineering has shaped up as a lucrative field. The enhanced interest in genetic research in the last few years, and the increased demand for scientific research in the fields of medicine, pharmacy and agriculture, has given this field a boost.

Medical breakthroughs have been achieved in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility and hereditary disorders. The isolation of genes that are responsible for common diseases like cystic fibrosis and hemochromatosis have been met with a degree of success. Researchers are currently working on finding multiple genes responsible for diseases like hypertension and diabetes. Research scientists in genetic engineering have also been working in the field of agriculture to come up with new crops that require fewer fertilizers, are disease resistant and more nutritious. Animal breeding is another area where research scientists in this field have contributed extensively.

Nature of work
Anybody with a basic degree in Life Sciences, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry can get into genetic engineering, which deals with the detailed study and manipulation of the genes of living organisms. “It is called genetic engineering because you are engineering a gene hitherto non existent in nature, by isolating genetic material from any species and recombining it,” says Dr Rita Mulherkar, Senior Scientist, Molecular Biology and Genetics, ACTREC, Tata Memorial Centre, Navi Mumbai.

The chromosomes, which contain the hereditary material of a cell, is made of deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA). "Relying on recombinant DNA technology, research scientists in genetic engineering have isolated and modified genes of microorganisms to develop new genetic strains of bacteria to improve the effect of antibiotics and other medicines. Transgenic plants and animals have also been made, which have a modified genome. Gene therapy has been the focus of research in various laboratories all over the world, in the search for an effective treatment for diseases like cancer," says Dr Mulherkar.

“Genetic engineers are required to work in sparklingly clean research laboratories. Since they are working with the minutest parts of cells, an eye for detail and concentration is absolutely required. With research on the same lines being conducted in laboratories all over the world, co-ordination and updation of latest studies is essential. Add to this, compliance with stringent safety standards and a fetish for cleanliness,” says Dr Vijaya Raghavan, Deputy Director (SG), National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health.

Eligibility
Post-graduate and doctoral programmes in Genetic Engineering are offered by several institutes across the country. You can also opt for a graduation (MSc in Genetic Engineering, Human Genetics, Genetic and Plant Breeding, etc).

In addition, most universities in India offer post graduate and doctoral programs in Biotechnology, wherein genetic engineering is one subsidiary covered in the syllabus and could be taken as a specialisation later. The eligibility criteria for an MSc is a BSc in Genetics or a related subject. Eligibility for getting into the BE/BTech courses in Biotechnology is 10+2 and merit ranking in the appropriate entrance exam.

Scope
altThere is enormous amount of research going on all over the world to find cures for various diseases, as also to improve the quality of food products. With genetic engineering permeating into these areas of agriculture, animal breeding and veterinary science, medicine, and pharmacy, the future is very bright for young scientists in this field.

“A genetic engineer can be employed as a research scientist with scientific and medical research institutions, or in the research and development department of pharmaceutical companies,” says Dr Raghavan. They are also absorbed in the production wing of pharmaceuticals. Teaching is a viable option. You could also opt for genetic fingerprinting in forensic science or agricultural research and employment in agriculture-related companies.

Remuneration
The remuneration is dependant on your educational qualifications and your research achievements. In government organisations, the starting basic salary for a graduate fresher is in the range of Rs 5000 - 8000, whereas in private and multinational pharmaceutical and medical companies, the emoluments would be much more. With experience and research achievements, the sky is the limit.

All about public services!

All about UPSC exams!

Over the years public service has been a favourite carrer choice of many people. Apart from engineering and medical careers, public services are a big draw for many students. Campus Fever looks at UPSC and all other things related to it.

How did the UPSC come into being?

Indianisation of the superior Civil Services became one of the major demands of the political movement compelling the British Indian Government to consider setting up of a Public Service Commission for recruitment to its services in the territory. The first Public Service Commission was set up on October 1st, 1926. However, its limited advisory functions failed to satisfy the people’s aspirations and the continued stress on this aspect by the leaders of our freedom movement resulted in the setting up of the Federal Public Service Commission.

The Constituent Assembly, after independence, saw the need for giving a secure and autonomous status to Public Service Commissions both at Federal and Provincial levels for ensuring unbiased recruitment to Civil Services as also for protection of service interests. With the promulgation of the new Constitution for independent India on 26th January, 1950, the Federal Public Service Commission was accorded a constitutional status as an autonomous entity and given the title – Union Public Service Commission

What is it?

All India Services

All India Service was created for maintaining the unity, integrity and stability of the nation after independence. It includes the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS- created in 1966). The recruitment to all the three services is made by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) these officers are recruited and trained by the central government and their services are placed under various State cadres. Indian Administrative Service is controlled by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

UPSC

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the recruitment and selection body for higher echelons of personal for government service in the country. It selects candidates for civil services, combined medical services, NDA, engineering, Indian foreign services and central police forces.

The latest news

UPSC will be introducing online registrations of applications for various exams and recruitments in the coming year.

UPSC, which conducts examinations for recruitment to various government services will be introducing a System for Online Application Procedure (SOAP) 2010 for all exams and recruitments.

Career expectations:

A highly competitive and challenging area, it involves a variety of jobs in different departments. Compared to private sector jobs this profession has job security. The prestige and power that comes along with these top-notch jobs is a definite reason for anybody to join this profession. The salary, allowances and facilities like healthcare, housing, conveyance etc. also make it a lucrative profession.

Civil service, the backbone of the Indian government machinery constitutes all the departments which runs the State administration. Entry into the IAS, IPS and the Central Services, Group A and Group B is through the All India Combined Competitive Examination for the Civil Services conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in different centers spread all over the country.

However, recruitment to the Indian Forest Service is through a different procedure. Entry into the State Civil Services is through a competitive examination conducted by every state public service commission. Anyone thinking of taking up civil service, should have an idea how difficult it is to get in as lakhs of candidates apply for the 400 to 500 vacancies that may arise. So once you decide to appear in civil service exam, one should be prepared to slog endlessly.

What to keep in mind?

When it comes to such careers, most of the candidates do it under the pressure of parents and relative, experts say. However, this later leads to unwilling performance or worse, unwilling service if they later get selected. "The first step towards your success is to choose your goal honestly. One shouldn't choose Civil Services as your goal simply because your father or mother has a dream or there is a pressure from your social circle. It should come from your heart. This exam is not like IIT-JEE or any other Engineering/Medical/University Entrance Examination. It demands at least one and half-year full time preparation with solid determination, which is possible only if the desire for Civil Services, is burning your heart incessantly." says one expert.

What to ignore?

Many of the students have presumptions that one should have come from a reputed Institute like IISc or any IIT to succeed in Civil Services. But the fact is that you need not have come from a reputed Institute. You need not to have a splendid academic background. You need not to have great scores in SSC or Intermediate. You need not have come from a rich family. You only need to have a dream to become an IAS officer and the rest will follow.

How to prepare?

As far as preparations are concerned, one can find leading guide books by various known authors in majority of the book stores. For better reference, you might like to have a look at the list prescribed by the Unnion Public Service Cimmision.

CampusFever has below compiled a list of books which can prove very handy for your preparations.

A word of advice:

Choosing an optional subject is another very crucial step of taking the exam successfully. One should not be in a hurry to decide about the optional. Before choosing optional subjects, a candidate can pick 5-6 random subjects [UPSC offers 23 subjects for preliminary exam] of your interest. The best method to find a right subject for you is going through NCERT books available on all subjects you has choosed randomly. It will assist you to reach at a final conclusion after careful assessment of your interest in a particular subject. One should remember that choosing optional subjects for CSE is a matter of your personal choice rather than advice from others. Choice of an optional subject depends upon your caliber, requirement of subject (Visionary, Numerical, and Theoretical), comfort level with the subject and availability of its study material in the market.

Another important and at times, misleading aspect of UPSC exams is the talk about 'scoring and non scoring subjects'. Please note that there is no subject that can be said to be scoring or non- scoring. UPSC is maintaining utmost balance between the subjects. It has brought all the optional subjects onto the same platform as far as scoring is concerned. Some of popular subjects like Pubic Administration, Psychology and Geography are choosed by aspirants due to following reasons-

  • Availability of study material

  • Availability of Guidance

The concept of scoring/non-scoring has nothing to do with it. Same subject can be scoring as well as non-scoring for two different aspirants. How good you will score in a particular subject is based upon your knowledge of subject matter and you interest to gain knowledge about subject matter? Scoring and non-scoring subjects is nothing more than a myth prevails among CS aspirants.

So to all the people who want to serve the country and make it a better place, UPSC exams is where you should be headed. Your decision now will affect the lives of many more in the future. Go for it!
