CAT trainers close down centres as aspirants drop, costs rise

AHMEDABAD: The Rs 400-crore Common Admission Test (CAT) training business is in a consolidation mode. The number of CAT-takers is decreasing after the MBA entrance went computer-based last year and institutes feel the cost of setting up a computer lab at each centre too high. Experts say, the next two years would see smaller institutes being acquired by bigger players.

CAT scores are considered for admission to 10 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and 150 B-Schools. More than one lakh candidates take coaching to prepare for the test.

With a computer-based test requiring coaching centres to install computers and develop software support, the new investment could be as high as Rs 1 crore. With competition prohibiting raising of fees (Rs 35,000 for an 18-month course), the institutes prefer to close down some centres.

CAT training institutes like IMS and PT Education, who have a national presence, have together closed down some 35 centres in prominent cities like Delhi, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Muzzafarpur, Gwalior, Surat, Ajmer and Lucknow. Smaller institutes like Ahmedabad-based Navigator Solutions has stopped CAT coaching and switched over to government and banking competitive exam coaching. A few more are closing down smaller centres.

Experts say, students are increasingly getting aware of the difficulty levels and do not take the test unless they are hopeful of clearing it. Also, departure from the paper-pencil format has discouraged a lot of aspirants from smaller towns who are not too comfortable with computers, thus leading to a drop in applicants. A lacklustre placement season too contributed to a sharp drop in the number of students taking coaching at the smaller centres, making business unviable for the institutes.

In 2008, around 2.71 lakh students appeared for CAT. The number dropped to 2.42 lakh in 2009 when the test changed its format and in 2010, some 2.04 lakh students are expected to take the test.

CAT coaching institutes expanded aggressively after 2001-02 as the number of CAT aspirants shot up and opened centres in smaller towns in 2006.

As CAT went computer-based, there was a need for huge investment to set up a good infrastructure. "We invested around Rs 50 lakh for installing 5-10 computers at each centre. However, we saw the craze for CAT dying in smaller towns. Those who really wanted to appear, would opt for training in bigger cities. As a result, we have closed down around 25 centres in cities like Rajahmundry, Gwalior, Kolhapur, Muzzafarpur and Satara," said Mr Sajnani from IMS. IMS has closed down centres in Delhi as well as the competition is high and margins are low. According to him, the margins were as high as 20%, some three-four years ago in CAT coaching business, but it has come down to only 5% in bigger cities and is even lesser in smaller towns, where the number of students is less.

Picture this- 54 Companies participated in the placement process suggesting a whopping 50% increase over the last year, a jump of 20% in the remuneration for the summer internship and a plethora of profiles to choose from. The Summer Internship placement process at Vinod Gupta School of Management reached new heights and standards, setting new milestones and marching ahead to the path of glory.

A major change this year has been the change in Summer Internship duration from 6 Months to 2 Months. This change has brought about participation from many new companies besides the regular recruiters. A total of 21 new companies participated in the summer placement process this year which included „big names‟ like Axis Bank, Reckitt Benckiser, Titan, Siemens, O3 Capital, Daimler, SCI and NABARD which indicates the strong image Vinod Gupta School of Management has contrived amongst the big recruiters' over the past years.

The Consulting bandwagon was carried by Deloitte US, Deloitte India, KPMG, Wipro, Synovate Business Consulting, Nodwin Consultants and Voltas to name a few. Process Improvement, Corporate Strategy and Planning, Business Advisory Services, Strategy Consulting, IT Consulting, and Sports Consulting were some of the profiles offered in the Consulting domain. Profiles ranging from Investment banking and Equity research to Analytics were offered by Companies like Nomura, O3 Capital, Venture East, NABARD, Axis Bank, ICICI Knowledge Park, SBI Mutual Fund, ONGC, Vistasoft and Bank of Baroda. Few Students preferred challenging profiles like Media Marketing and Strategy, Social Networking Marketing, and Business Development for Immersive Virtual World Technologies, Environment, Climate and Infrastructure Consulting etc with Startups like Oxylabs, CTRAN Consulting, Sequoia Management, IntelliAnt and Indusgeeks Solutions. The average stipend crossed Rs. 37,000 with the highest domestic stipend being Rs. 70,000 . Overall, the high point of Summer Placements 2010 at VGSoM was neither the fact that many students were placed with multiple offers, nor it was the high stipend bagged; rather it was that all of the students got the profile they wanted, in the most sought after companies.
